A large light sculpture hangs over the stage. Nine dancers and a DJ gradually fill the space and move through different moods, sometimes meditative, sometimes highly energetic, but always in connection with each other and the audience. Connection – between people, places, bodies, and communities – is a theme that repeatedly drives the Brazilian choreographer Renan Martins. With a fun and critical approach, and influenced by his personal experiences as a queer person of colour in Europe, Martins combines dance and music with political reflection. Inspired by Bell Hooks' book All About Love: New Visions, Martins explores our view of relationships and intimacy. Diamonds is a dance ranging about separation and connection, about a society that often reinforces individualism. But how long can we go without a relationship, without belonging, without togetherness?
