Explore dance – Dance for young audience

TANZPAKT Stadt-Land-Bund

The funding awarded to the joint project by Focus Dance – Dance and Schools association Munich (Fokus Tanz – Tanz und Schule e.V. München), fabrik moves (fabrik Potsdam) and K3 | Tanzplan Hamburg will close a national gap in the cultural offer for children and young people, as explore dance is aimed at the long-term consolidation and artistic development of dance for young audiences. From 2018 established choreographers within the national German network are invited to Potsdam, Munich, and Hamburg to develop and present new works for young audiences. Reciprocal guest performances enable the pieces to be seen at different places. The new productions are brought together in an annual platform in one of the three partner cities and offer the opportunity to meet organizers, artists, the young audiences, educators and parents. A subsequent symposium on the theme of dance for young people will boost the exchange of information, ideas and experience at the national and international level. The platforms take place in Hamburg in 2019, in Munich in 2020 and in Potsdam in 2022.

Each of the three institutions also establishes long-term co-operation with local schools in order to integrate the target group directly into the artists’ work processes. The project will thus lay the foundation for a sustainable, continuous and high-quality event and transfer programme in contemporary dance for children and young people, aged from 5 to 15, and strengthen the visibility of contemporary dance as an art form in the field of performing arts for young audiences.

From July 2022, HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts Dresden joins the project as a fourth partner and strengthens the visibility of the field of dance for young audiences by expanding the network to four federal states. Artistically, explore dance will focus in the new funding phase from July 2022 to the end of 2023 on mediation offers and pop ups as mobile productions that open up access to dance in schools, museums, cultural centres and theatre spaces both regionally and nationwide. Three festivals with expert meetings present the 9 emerging productions and offer space for networking and a dialogue on cultural and educational policy.

explore dance was awarded the Perspective Prize of the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST in 2019.
