A circus pitches its tents – and stays. What at first appears to be a fleeting guest performance develops into a world governed by its own rules, in which reality and performance become increasingly intertwined. Night after night, the acts are repeated: a singing mouse, a monkey in search of humanity, and an audience waiting for the extraordinary. Yet with every performance, the boundaries between stage and auditorium become blurred. Everyone becomes part of a system that is at once fascinating, comical, and unsettling.
Inspired by the stories of Franz Kafka, Zirkus Kafka combines absurd humour with poetic imagery and a quiet melancholy. The travelling troupe invites us to reflect on transformation, conformity and the power of habit – and on just how imperceptibly the absurd can become part of everyday life.
