Potsdamer Tanztage 2014

21 May – 01 Jun 2014

From the emotional vigour of the spiritual “Krump” dance through to spontaneous and energetic dance of unusually young performers: The programme of the POTSDAMER TANZTAGE 2014 creates an exciting mix of the most recent international dance theatre productions. Artists from France, Brazil, Belgium, Greece, Netherlands, Spain and Finland bring their performances to Potsdam. A rich music line will run alongside with bands such as ¡MÁS SHAKE! and BOBO&HERZFELD.

French choreographer Heddy Maalem’s most recent production “Eloge du puissant royaume” will open the festival. In the centre of this performance is the “KRUMP” (Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise)- an authentic and deeply spiritual dance stemming from the slums of LA. Ritual-like, high impact and slow movements channel inner beliefs, which can be intensified into a trance. This dance is a chance to express the violence that drives us, to understand, share and get rid of it.

Another highlight of the festival is the first and unfortunately last performance of “Baron Samedi” by French choreographer Alain Buffard. During decades, he has been one of the most significant figures to influence the European dance scene. Through a carnival-like ceremony, triggered by an uncanny voodoo-baron, dancing actors and singing dancers re-interpret Kurt Weill’s “Threepenny opera”.

Mickaël Phelippeau (F) surprises with his choreography on the youngster “Ethan” and Ugo Dehaes/fABULEUS with “GIRLS”. Both pieces stage very young dancers and explore themes of personal change and expectation anchored in the latent age of youth. These disturbing though touching works reject any attempt to belittle this delicate passage in life.

Long time known and appreciated Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues returns to Potsdam with “Pindorama” (original denomination for Brazil in the language of the Tupis)- a highly poetical and visual piece. United by a simple physicality, the eleven nacked performers create touching images of community in harmony with an archaic world and water landscapes.

Works by Kat Válastur (Athen/Berlin), Jan Martens (Amsterdam) and Lali Ayguadé (Barcelona) will have their Premiere on the Festival.

Especially for families and the younger audience the festival foresees the “Family celebration”. For this occasion the whole family can attend a diverse mix of performances, workshops and music on 1st of June.

Alongside the performance programme there will be an extensive offer of 21 workshops for professional and hobby, young and old dancers. Introductory and Q and A sessions with the artists will accompany the performances as well as a series of concerts by Jazz, Pop and World music bands.

With excitement the bands ¡MÁS SHAKE! and BOBO&HERZFELD are awaited. Whereas on their previous album “ Lieder von Liebe und Tod” BOBO&HERZFELD devoted themselves to the transformation of German folk songs, their actual album “Liederseelen” delves into the spirit of romanticism.

At the beginning of the 1960’s the “Beatlemania” spread into the entire world. The fascination of the band led to the formation of other bands. One of the greatest bands from that era is the “Los Shakers” from Montevideo, also known as the “Beatles from Rio de Plata”. A rare success among Beat- bands in South America ¡MÁS SHAKE!  are ready to celebrate their best songs and proof that fine beat does not have to come from the island. The band is Berlin-based and transforms the audience through their contagious beats from Uruguay, Columbia, Peru.
