THE POTSDAMER TANZTAGE TURNS 20!
The history of the fabrik and the Potsdamer Tanztage is a history of big dreams, daring ideas, social and artistic creativity. It is a history in the east of Germany, in Potsdam, and since its beginning it has been multinational, intercultural, open to and dependent on co-creation, participation and the enthusiastic support of many. It does not begin without reason in 1989, at a time when all social constraints, norms and rules began to falter overnight and people began to dance together in the streets.
"The givenness of the place decisively shapes our processes of creation and production. This is as true for a favela in Rio as for any other place in the world," wrote Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues in the fabrik's "guest book".
In the festival's 20th year, this credo is reflected in a special way in the 17 invited festival productions: in Pierre Rigal's hip-hop fairy tale "Asphalte" from the Parisian suburbs or in Martine Pisani's landscape performance, as powerful and endangered as an early blossom, in the work of the great dance innovator Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker or in the moving search of the Palestinian-Israeli ensemble around Arkadi Zaides for a place of longing for peace. At the opening, Patrick Scully's fascinatingly crazy idea of a boat ballet combines artistic imagination, community commitment and the scenic beauty of Potsdam and the Schiffbauergasse in a grandiose way. The Ballet of Boats will transform the Tiefen See directly at Schiffbauergasse into an oversized stage for about 50 boats, kayaks and canoes. The festival could hardly celebrate its 20th anniversary in a bigger way.
By complementing the stage programme with a wide range of workshops, audience talks and special formats for children and young people, the Dance Days continue their tradition of bringing audiences and artists particularly close together. And above all: the family festival, the concerts, the parties and the tango and swing balls make the festival what its name promises: a real festival.
